THE CASTLE

The Miramare Castle and park were commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg who decided—around 1855—to build a residence worthy of his name and rank outside of Trieste, looking out to the sea and surrounded by a wide garden.

THE PARK

The Park of Miramare, with a surface of 22 hectares, is the result of Maximilian’s long and demanding project on the rocky promontory of Grignano, which originally resembled a Karst area almost devoid of vegetation.

THE STABLES

The Stables of the castle of Miramare, commissioned by Maximilian of Hapsburg, were planned by the engineer Carl Junker and built between 1856 and 1860. The building is situated in a sheltered space along the access road to the castle coming from Trieste, far enough from the residence.

THE CASTELLETTO

Parallel to the building of the Castle, Maximilian had the small Gartenhaus—also called “Castelletto” (small castle) for its exterior resemblance to the castle—constructed in the park.

Umberto Noni (Trieste 1892 – Roma 1971), Still life with globe, oil on canvas, 1931

The painting was made in 1931 by the Trieste painter Umberto Noni, at the time of his stay in the Castle of the Duke Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta, who wanted it hung in the Library of Maximilian of Habsburg, used as his own private study.
